Bern Porter: Wisdom of the Questioning Eye
Great stuff, love this essay
In Easter of 1983 I stayed overnight at your house to do an interview with you. You suggested we stop by your friend Bern Porter’s place to sleep the next night. I recall you were specific that we make sure he eats something.
So nothing could prepare me for the experience of the Institute for Advanced Thinking. I can honestly say that it changed my life.
We shared a meal and much discussion. I found him to be very engaging and puzzling at the same time. I was 21 at the time
What changed my life was when he looked into my eyes, very intently, and informed me that poetry and physics were very similar, and indeed intertwined. A concept I had never considered before.
I’ve thought of this often over the years, and am only now truly beginning to understand what he was saying…
I understand that you were trying to make sure your friend ate something (claiming an allergy to pots and pans), but it affected my life in a big way.
For this I thank you
